Slipped into June

A four day weekend to wallow and luxuriate and laze in. Friday night at the movies, a crew of girlfriends and a vat of popcorn (and an awful, awful film... I'm not recommending the new SATC to anyone). Bowling at retro lanes hidden beneath Holborn, one by-fluke strike, Cherry Cream Soda and French Fries. Columbia Road flower market, tulips, coffee and sky-blue nail polish, modelled by C. A lazy afternoon barbecue in a small but perfectly formed Clapham garden, swordfish skewers and Turkish potato salad. The first Pimms of the season, mixed by an American, but so good I think I'll struggle to beat it all this summer. A dear friend's birthday party where we drank from Poole pottery and ate two types of cake, one of which was iced with a rather spectacular fox. The Design Museum, and an exhibition that made me long for the heat and red earth of Africa as the grey clouds rolled by outside. Then my extra day, yesterday, as most of the country trundled back to work, a day to myself, for washing sheets and baking banana bread, rain dripping down the window panes. A day for getting lost in a book and spending time cooking dinner (Ottolenghi's vegetable paella if you're interested, oh how we love him so!).

And so we have slipped into June, bringing with it roses and lettuces from Mum's garden, and the last of the home grown asparagus for tonight's supper, which, combined with glorious sunshine and the prospect of of another weekend in just a couple of days, made being back at work today after such a long and lovely weekend, very much more bearable.

  6. You seem to have had a very good beginning of the month. On Tuesday it rained here too, and it almost felt like November again. I made soup and read my book on the sofa!
